Great thoughts Jay. I think social media sites will have- and are all ready having- a great impact on how people are getting their information and USING the information about candidates and issues. Twitter was amazing through both the Democratic and Republican conventions here in the US. Actually, I received MORE information from sites such as twitter, and the many political blogs that are out there than I would have ever received simply by using the mainstream.
The mainstream discounts their importance, but I beg to differ. It’s sort of a revolution if you will, and I think voters will be more informed because of social media. If the mainstream doesn’t catch on, they are going to be left in the dust.
On the candidate side, you all ready see the impact by the blog that got Palin noticed. I mean, Obama sends text messages and twitters to his followers and subscribers! I think social media could be a very valuable tool in bringing some true democracy back in play. It’s so easy to follow social media, candidates might actually start using it to get a feel for what people are thinking. They almost have no choice- these people are voters!
No, I didn’t have any thoughts, did I?
Good show!
Thanks Dani! What I thought was most interesting about the Palin case in particular was the apparent impact of third-party communicators using social on the decisions made by the campaign.
It’s one thing to see how the campaigns have been USING social media channels (e.g. Obama in Twitter, debates taking questions from YouTube & Myspace, etc.), but seeing how they are increasingly REACTING to conversations taking place in them that have been started by others, really to me that seems to be a very interesting development.
It looks like the Canadian election will be called tomorrow, I for one will be watching closely to see how conversations originating with bloggers and other social media participants impact the discourse and the issues discussed. Can’t wait to see how it plays out…
